Musical Landscapes of Lihir: Curator's talk

For almost two decades, Lihir has been host to a large-scale gold mine, which has radically transformed its social life and material circumstance. Ancestral performance culture continues to be at its centre. This exhibition, Musical Landscapes of Lihir, in collaboration with the Lihir Cultural Heritage Association, brings together contemporary Lihir items related to performance, many of which have been especially made for this exhibition, and multimedia items including film and sound recordings that set the audio and visual scene. The resulting exhibition allows the visitor to become immersed in the soundscape of this remote part of the world. This seminar will take the form of a curator’s talk in the gallery space.

Dr Kirsty Gillespie is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, and the co-curator of the exhibition Musical Landscapes of Lihir. Since 2007 she has worked with the people of the Lihir Island Group in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea on a cultural heritage program for the islands. Kirsty also teaches World Music at the School of Music.
